One of Lamar County’s busiest intersections is getting a new traffic signal.

Today, October 8, 2025, the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Quick Response Program is starting a project to install a new traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. Route 41 and State Route 36. Crews will keep lane closures to a minimum, which is expected to take up to 90 days to complete.

Citizens have often complained about congestion at the intersection. Many have also expressed safety concerns, particularly as vehicles turn left from what is commonly called the 36 Bypass onto the southbound lane of U.S. 41. Trucks from I-75 take this route to bypass downtown Barnesville, leading to additional safety concerns and congestion.

According to GDOT, this will improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection.

The work is part of GDOT’s Quick Response Program, which targets smaller-scale projects that can be completed quickly to address safety concerns, operational issues, and minor congestion problems throughout the state.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution while crews are working.
