Barnesville Holiday Shooting Prompts Urgent Search; Suspect Still at Large

The Barnesville Police Department has released new information and identified a suspect in the Christmas morning shooting that left one person injured and prompted a holiday search for the man who fled the scene.

According to Lt. Michael Rainer with Barnesville Police, the shooting happened at approximately 12:50 a.m. at a residence on Kate Court in Barnesville.

Police now say Gregory Young, 35, of Durham, North Carolina, is wanted in connection with the Christmas morning incident. Investigators say Young kicked in the door of the residence, an argument followed, and gunfire was exchanged.

Chris Smith, 31, was shot in the abdomen and was transported to the hospital. Smith underwent surgery, and police say he is currently recovering.

The resident of the Kate Court home, Chelsea Peters, 34, recently moved to Barnesville. Police say Young is Peters’ former boyfriend, and the two share children.

Lt. Rainer confirmed that Young and Peters have a history of domestic violence.

Warrants Issued

Warrants have been issued for Young on the following charges:

  • Two counts of aggravated assault
  • Reckless conduct
  • Home invasion, second degree
  • Possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime

As of Friday evening, Young had not been located. According to police, he was last known to be traveling north and may be driving a 2006 Chevrolet 3500 pickup truck with a North Carolina license plate.

Anyone who sees Young or has information about his whereabouts is asked not to approach him, but to contact law enforcement immediately.

The Barnesville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is leading the investigation.
