The Lamar County High School athletics programs have competed in Class A–Division I, sometimes referred to as “Big Single A,” for the past four academic years.
With reclassification coming up next year, there was considerable speculation over where Lamar County High School would be placed.
The Georgia High School Association released its classification proposal for its member schools today. With a reclassification count of 907 students, Lamar County is firmly placed in Class AAA. For perspective, the largest school in Class AAA is Burke County High School with an enrollment of 1,100 students, while the smallest is Jasper County High School, listed at 841 students.
Regions have not yet been assigned, but it appears likely that Lamar County High School will be grouped with area rivals, Jackson High School and Pike County High School, which have also been placed in AAA.
The current reclassification proposal is subject to change based on any appeals that may be granted. These appellate meetings are scheduled to take place early in the month of November.
This classification cycle will be in place from Fall 2026 through Spring 2028.
Lamar County High School compared to schools in bordering districts:
| SCHOOL | PROPOSED CLASS 2026–2028 | CLASSIFICATION COUNT (Enrollment) |
| Lamar County | AAA | 907 |
| Jackson | AAA | 982 |
| Pike County | AAA | 1,063 |
| Upson–Lee | AAAA | 1,149 |
| Spalding | AAAA | 1,237 |
| Mary Persons | AAAAA | 1,385 |
| Griffin | AAAAA | 1,475 |
