Gordon State College hosted its Student Veteran and Adult Learner Symposium on Thursday, April 24, 2025, drawing professors, staff, and community members together to focus on “Advocacy in Action.”
The biennial event centered on ways to better serve student veterans and adults as they pursue higher education. Dr. Inez Jones, associate professor of biology and the event chair, opened the day alongside Dr. Ric Calhoun, assistant vice president of innovative education, and Gordon State President Dr. Donald Green.

The keynote speaker, Joe Dan Banker, a retired Navy officer and director of Military Affairs for the University System of Georgia, encouraged those in attendance to recognize the value of veterans and adult learners.
“They don’t just bring life experience; they elevate the whole learning environment,” Banker said, emphasizing the broader impact veterans and adult learners have on campus life. He added, “Their perspectives are invaluable, and by supporting their transition, we enrich the entire educational experience.”
Dr. Inez Jones delivered her thoughts on the initiative, saying, “Bringing together faculty, staff, and community members to support our student veterans and adult learners has become more than a professional goal. It’s a personal mission.”
One of the key sessions was Green Zone Training, led by Katrina Autry from Dalton State College. The workshop provided Gordon’s faculty and staff various ways to support students transitioning from military service to the college campus.
Breakout sessions throughout the day covered topics like how to use artificial intelligence to help adult learners and how to keep online students engaged. A panel of student veterans shared their stories and answered questions, as well.
Dr. Jones said the symposium may only last a day, but its impact will last much longer, even beyond Gordon’s campus.
Though Gordon’s days as a military college are part of its past, its heart for those who have served in the armed forces is evident and ongoing.
