What do you do when you cannot help your children with their math homework? This week, a special event aims to make math more approachable for local families.

The Math for Adults (MAPS) Foundation is teaming up with Gordon State College’s Hightower Library to host a free Community Math Night on Thursday, November 13, beginning with a campus tour at 4:30 p.m. and the math event at 5:30 p.m.

The event will feature hands-on, interactive math activities and opportunities for families to see math in everyday life. Participants will even be encouraged to create their own math problems at home and discuss math as part of their daily routines. Dinner will be served, and door prizes have been donated by Texas Roadhouse, Dairy Queen, and Gordon State College.

The MAPS Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Dr. Andrea Knapp in Griffin, has spent nearly two decades helping families become more confident in mathematics. Working with Mr. Art Cain and Dr. Racheal Landers at the UGA Griffin Office of Continuing Education, the MAPS team has expanded the program across Georgia and the United States.

Since the start of the school year, five MAPS events have already been held. Thursday’s event marks a new step in the program’s local expansion through Gordon State College.

Families can register for Thursday’s Community Math Night at https://www.mapsfoundation.com/.
