Barnesville, GA – A historic building on the corner of Main Street and Forsyth Street suffered minor damage following a one-vehicle accident earlier this morning. The incident occurred when a vehicle struck the corner of the building after the driver experienced a medical issue. Fortunately, the damage to the building was minimal with a few broken windows. Some of the building’s masonry was damaged on impact, as well. No other injuries were reported.
The site, colloquially called “Tommy’s,” served as a grocery store and then a clothing store owned by the late Tommy Gassess. According to tax records, the building was built in 1863 and is owned by Joseph and Kristy Sims. It currently houses a real estate business.
As a result of the accident, the northbound lane of Main Street was temporarily closed to allow for the necessary clean-up. However, the lane has since been reopened, and the area is once again vibrant with activity.
