Lamar County won a rematch with Taylor County on Thursday night in Butler, and fans got to enjoy some free baseball. The Trojans executed the comeback in the 10th inning with an offensive onslaught.

Taylor County took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. They extended their lead in the third, giving Lamar County a five-run deficit.

Lamar County began a rally in the top of the fourth, starting with a James Green single on a ground ball. Green got to third base after Logan Miller hit a ground ball to center field. The bases were loaded after Charlie Hutto took one for the team. Aiden Maurice walked on five pitches to put Lamar County in the run column. Walker Greer came up to the plate with the bases loaded, no outs. Greer sac-flied to left field, giving the Trojans their second run of the evening. Lamar County loaded the bases again after a single by Abel Ramirez. Disciplined batting by Caden Crawford and Nate Striplin gave Lamar their third and fourth runs of the inning, each advancing a runner on consecutive walks. However, the Trojans were still behind a run at the end of the inning, leaving the bases loaded on the third out.

After a three-up-three-down bottom of the fourth inning, the Trojans took the lead in the top of the fifth. Logan Miller led off with a fly ball that dropped into left field for a double. Miller scored on a two-out single by Walker Greer. Carson Howell gave Lamar County the lead on a double, bringing Greer home. Howell scored on a double by Abel Ramirez. This gave the Trojans a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Taylor County tied the game at seven after two hits and an error.

In the top of the sixth inning with two outs, Logan Miller was at the plate. On the first pitch, Miller homered on a solo shot to left field. Lamar County led 8-7 until Taylor tied it up on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth.

Excellent pitching and defense continued into extra innings with the game tied at eight.

Lamar County cooked Taylor in the top of the 10th to put the game out of reach, racking up 13 runs! James Green led off with a single to third base. Logan Miller moved him to third on a double to right field. Charlie Hutto was intentionally walked to load up the bases with no outs. Aiden Maurice brought in the runner from third on a line drive to center field. This gave Lamar County a one-run lead and loaded the bases again—no outs. Walker Greer singled on a line drive to left field, bringing home Hutto and Van Padgett (pinch runner). The score was then 11-8.

Caden Crawford got to first on a base hit with one out, and Lamar County took a 12-8 lead. A sacrifice fly to center from Nate Striplin gave the Trojans their second out, but Abel Ramirez scored to give Lamar County 13 runs.

The Trojans’ offensive explosion continued in the 10th. With two outs, the Lamar County would unleash an eight-run scoring barrage. James Green reached first on a ground ball, Ramirez scoring. With the score 14-8, Logan Miller singled to left, Crawford scoring Lamar’s 15th run of the night. Green scored on a wild pitch to batter, Charlie Hutto, who was later hit by a pitch. Aiden Maurice walked to load up the bases with two outs.

An error at third base allowed Walker Greer to reach first base safely. Miller scored on the error to give the Trojans a 10-run lead. With the bases loaded, Carson Howell doubled on a line drive to center. This scored two runs. Lamar County scored its final run of the night after Caden Crawford hit a line drive to center field, scoring Carson Howell.

With the score 21-8 in favor of Lamar County, the Vikings had quite a mountain to climb. Taylor County added two runners on an error and single, but Charlie Hutto struck out the next batter. The second out came on an infield fly. With the Vikings down to their last out, the bases were loaded after a walk. Taylor scored on a hit batter, making the score 21-9.

With the bases loaded, Lamar County ended the game on a fielder’s choice.

Charlie Hutto earned the win for the Trojans, pitching two innings, giving up two hits, one run, one walk, and striking out three. James Green also had two strikeouts in three innings. Logan Miller struck out four.

Logan Miller led the team with five hits and one homerun in seven at-bats. Walker Greer batted in four runs on two hits.

Coming Up

Now 5-5 overall, Lamar County will begin region play on Tuesday, March 18, facing the McNair Mustangs in Atlanta. First pitch is scheduled for 5:15 PM.

The Mustangs are 3-3 currently. After losing their first three games of the season, McNair is now on a three-game winning streak with wins over Miller Grove, Cedar Grove, and Martin Luther King.

A non-region game at Callaway has also been rescheduled for March 20.

The Trojans will then host McNair at Aldora Field in a double-header on Friday, March 21.
