Throughout the months of July and August, Lamar Arts hosted a variety of classes for amateur and aspiring artists in our community. The Create-A-Palooza event culminated in a finale reception at the Lamar Arts Depot Gallery on Friday, August 30 from 6-8 pm.
This particular show and reception were unique in that the artwork on display was created not only by the local artists who hosted the workshops but also by the students who participated in the events. It was an excellent celebration of local creativity and artistic pursuits with an array of artistic styles and mediums on display. Workshops and classes were hosted by Haley Turner, Bambi Rogers, Eleanor Stecker, Amy Renfroe, Becky Patterson, Dulcie Hambrick, Ann Mann, Bob Barber, and Jessica Traylor. Class participants ranged from kindergarten students to seniors, art enthusiasts to those who have never painted before, and everything in between. Overall, 76 artists took part in Create-A-Palooza this summer. Lamar Arts also hosted a few free and low-cost events during Create-A-Palooza such as rock painting and chalk art around the fountain.
During his welcome speech Lamar Arts President, Bob Barber, shared information regarding upcoming events including the 1st Annual Buggs Days Cake Bake Off competition, extended gift shop during the Buggy Days Festival, local author book signing events, and “The Dark and Gothic Arts: A Mysterious Curation” opening reception set for October 4 from 6-8 pm.
Barber also drew the attendees’ attention to the new brick sign in front of the depot that will replace the faded wood sign. The sign is set to be completed before the 50th anniversary of Barnesville’s Buggy Days Festival. A time capsule commemorating the occasion and Lamar Arts history will be placed inside. Barber highlighted the contents of the time capsule and the individuals who helped make it happen.
Lamar Arts will host the Buggs Days Downtown Kick-Off Party on Thursday, September 19 from 5-7 pm. For more information about Lamar Arts, visit www.lamararts.org or the Lamar Arts Facebook page.
