On Monday, September 8, the Lamar County Board of Education approved Mr. Jeffery Sloan as the next principal of Lamar County High School. The unanimous decision was made at a called board meeting on the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Jessica Watson.
Sloan most recently served as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Lamar County High School. He has fulfilled various other roles, including classroom teacher, alternative school teacher, ISS coordinator, weight room instructor, and assistant and head coach of multiple athletic programs at LCHS. He has been in Lamar County for the past 11 years.
Jeff and his wife, Sarah, are both employed by Lamar County Schools. Sarah is a Kindergarten teacher at Lamar County Primary School. Their oldest son, Cayden, a 2022 graduate of Lamar County High School, is now serving in the U.S. Air Force. Their youngest son, Jaxon, is a 6th grader at Lamar County Middle School, and their daughter, Annie, is a 2nd grader at the primary school.
Career Achievements
Throughout his career, Sloan has received various honors as an educator. He was New Teacher of the Year at South Paulding High School in 2006 and has been named Region Coach of the Year five times (2013, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022).
As athletic director, he guided Lamar County to back-to-back Athletic Directors Cup Championships in 2023 and 2024. Earlier this year, he was recognized as the 2025 Class 4A Division I Athletic Director of the Year. Sloan also represents Lamar County and the region on the GHSA Executive Committee.
Certification and Education Credentials
Sloan earned his B.S. in History Education (Cum Laude) from Kennesaw State University in 2006 and his M.A.T. in Teaching and Curriculum (Summa Cum Laude) from Piedmont University in 2010. He holds a Gifted Endorsement (2011), a Tier I Leadership Certificate from Albany State University (2022), and an Ed.S. in Leadership with Tier II Certification from Columbus State University (2024).
He is certified in Political Science, History, Geography, Economics, and Behavioral Science (grades 6–12), as well as Health and Physical Education (P–12).
Grant Turner is the editor of the Barnesville Buzz and an educator, coach, and writer based in Barnesville, Georgia. He shares stories that bridge community, faith, and personal growth. In addition to teaching and coaching, Grant is Director of Musical Worship and a Sunday School teacher at New Hope Baptist Church in Zebulon, Georgia. He lives in Barnesville with his wife, Haley.
