It is National 4-H Week, and Lamar County 4-H has no shortage of spirit and passion this fall season! Lamar County Extension Coordinator and 4-H Agent, Octavia Jackson, has a wide variety of contests, activities, events, and fundraisers planned for the coming weeks that benefit the youth of Lamar County. Visit the “Lamar County 4-H – UGA Extension” Facebook page for live updates and announcements concerning the following events. 

NO-CARVE PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST ANNOUNCED

The Barnesville-Lamar County Library and Lamar County 4-H announce their fifth annual “No-Carve Pumpkin Decorating Contest”.  This contest is open to 1st-12th graders and adults (18+ who are not in high school) living or attending school in Lamar County, GA. Additionally, students who submitted a “Change in Membership Form” to become a member of the Lamar County 4-H program for 2025-2026 may also enter a submission.

Individuals interested in entering the contest must complete an online entry form at tinyurl.com/library4-Hpumpkindecocontest by Friday, October 10 before 5 p.m.  Pumpkin entries must not be artificial and must not be punctured, carved, cut or hollowed out.  Pumpkins must be dropped off at the Barnesville-Lamar County Library on October 20 between 10:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. 

There are three contest categories: “Most Creative,” “Book Character,” and “Funniest.” Only one entry per individual.  Winners will be announced via Facebook on October 23 at 7:00 p.m. A $50 gift card will be awarded to the ‘Best in Show’ pumpkin in both the youth and adult categories.  

All pumpkins will be on display October 21 – November 2. Pumpkins must be picked up at the Barnesville-Lamar County Library on November 3 between 10:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

4-H PECAN FUNDRAISER 

Get an order of delicious pecans just in time for the holidays at only $15/pound. Complete an online order form by October 30 before 4:30 p.m. at tinyurl.com/LC4HPecanFundraiser. Orders will also be taken by phone by contacting the Lamar County Extension/4-H Office at 770-358-5163. Orders are not complete until payment is received in the Lamar County Extension/4-H office by the deadline. Cash and checks made payable to Lamar County 4-H will be accepted as payment. Pecans will be available for pick up at the Lamar County Extension/4-H Office located in the Lamar County Administration Building in mid-November.

4-H FALL FRONT DOOR PRODUCE FUNDRAISER 

Lamar County 4-H invites you to support youth programs by purchasing a box of fresh fall produce through the Georgia 4-H Front Door Produce fundraiser. Purchase a 20 pound box of fresh produce for yourself, relatives or donate a box to a family in need. Each produce box is only $30. The produce box includes an assortment of seasonal vegetables. The contents will vary, but boxes could consist of a combination of the following items: bell peppers, cucumbers/pickling cucumbers, zucchini/yellow squash, corn and green beans, jalapeños, and cabbage.The deadline to place an order for a box is November 7.
